The method

Four seconds,
before the spiral.

It's not about ignoring real symptoms, and it's not positive thinking. It's a practical, four-second interruption of the loop — used at the exact moment your thumb reaches for the search bar.

If you'd like — breathe with it. In as it grows, out as it settles.
No pressure. It's just here.

Step by step

The Flip Method is simple.

1second

Notice the thought

“There it is.” Catch the anxious thought the moment it arrives — before it becomes a search, a check, a spiral.

2seconds

Assess for action

Does this thought need real action? A genuine symptom deserves a real doctor — not a search engine at 2am. Most anxious thoughts need none.

3seconds

Flip if no action needed

No action needed? Flip it. Don't argue with the thought, don't research it, don't feed it. Let it pass through.

4seconds

Thank your brain

Your brain was trying to protect you. Thank it — and get back to your life.

Total: 4 seconds — before anxiety can take hold.

Why it works

“Your anxiety is like a guard dog that barks at everything. You don't need to get rid of the dog — you need to train it. That's what the Flip Method does.”

An honest note

The method isn't everything.
Sometimes you need more — and that's okay.

From Chapter 15 of the book: “The Flip Method works best when you're capable of thinking clearly. If you're too deep in panic, get help getting to a place where you can use it.”

Professional help

Find someone who specialises in health anxiety. There is no version of this where asking for help is failure.

Medication

“No shame — it's a tool, not failure.” Talk to your doctor about what's right for you.

Counseling

Especially if trauma triggered this. A good counsellor changes what a book can't reach.

Support groups

The right ones — not anxiety forums. Being understood is medicine of its own.
